There has been a brightening spotlight on refugee issues for a few years now (since roughly 2015). Refugees are now in the global consciousness in a way they never been before, but the fact remains that displaced people existed in even the most ancient of days.
We do well to turn to the Bible for guidance as we consider the refugee crisis of our day. The whole of Scripture is a narrative of displacement and finding Home, and many characters we are familiar with were refugees themselves.
Tabitha McDuffee’s ebook, Refugees in the Bible: Understanding Today’s Refugee Crisis, shows us “the parallels between the stories of biblical refugees and the experiences of present day refugees,” helping us understand the Scripture’s “relevance for today” as we seek to welcome immigrants in the Name of Jesus.
Each chapter begins with beautiful artwork and a retelling of a biblical story of a refugee, then shifts to describe a similar type of refugee today (including those forced from their homes for religious reasons, because of political persecution, because of natural disasters, etc.).
This book is perfect as a jumping off place for learning about current refugee issues, as Tabitha writes just enough to whet our appetites and then gives us links for further reading at the end of each chapter. She also suggests that if we are befriending refugees, we can share these biblical stories of refugees as a a way to connect with them.
I would highly recommend this book to those wanting to understand the causes of displacement, to grasp the sheer number of refugees in the Bible, and to grapple with what our treatment of refugees should be in light of these things.
